An important step in opposing the plans to build three wind farms TERNA ENERGY S.A. on Kythira was noted at the recent meeting of the Regional Committee on the Environment and Spatial Planning of the Peloponnese. With the its unanimous decision (No. 44/2025), the Commission issued an opinion negative regarding the Environmental Impact Study (EIS) for the project.
The decision concerns the project titled: «Complex of Three Aeolian Power Plants (ASPIE)» total power 135 MW, which is scheduled to be installed at three locations on Kythira:
- «KARVOUNOLAKKOS – PALM TREES» (31.5 MW)
- «SEA BIRDS» (51.96 MW)
- «XEROKAMBIA» (47.96 MW)
Environmental Impacts and Shortcomings
The Environmental Impact Study was classified by the Commission inadequate, particularly with regard to the related project for the electrical interconnection with the mainland grid, as an underwater and overhead line is planned to extend to the Molaoi Ultra-High Voltage Substation (UHS). According to the unanimous decision, the electrical interconnection results in significant environmental nuisance in parts of the Peloponnese, with special mention of the Municipality Monemvasia.
The issue was discussed at length in the 6th Meeting of the Committee which took place on July 4, 2025, in Tripoli.
The reaction from the residents of Kythira
Η Citizens' Movement of Kythira – Dynamo Kythira welcomed the decision with gratitude, noting that:
«The company’s EIA was deemed inadequate, as the associated project places a significant environmental burden on municipalities in the Peloponnese. We thank them warmly!»
This decision bolsters the efforts of the local community, which for years has been voicing its opposition to plans for industrial wind farm facility on the island.
It should be noted that TERNA’s project is part of the company’s broader plan for the «Green Transition,» but it is facing strong opposition in Kythira and the Peloponnese due to its environmental and social impacts.
