A thorny subject has been chosen by Christopher Nolan, by far the thorniest of his entertainment career. «Shot in IMAX, the thriller throws the audience into a historical paradox, that of an enigmatic man who must risk destroying the world in order to save it,» the film's marketing says. Killian Murphy plays the Father of the Atomic Bomb, J. Robert Oppenheimer.
Universal has released the first, black and white and short teaser, giving sneak peeks of Murphy as Oppenheimer accompanied by a countdown to «the day the world changed forever». Let's bank on Nolan's genius that we won't see a superpower apology that, in our usually effervescent age, contributes nothing useful. We like him keep our cards close to our chest, though the Bomb case is not a story that in its practical application stands up to any apology, it led to an unprecedented crime against Humanity. Yet it will be of great interest to look at the case behind its construction, the personal dilemmas that became collective history.
In other lighter vein, it's worth noting that the stellar cast of Nolan's film (Murphy, Matt Damon, Robert Downey Jr, Emily Blunt, Florence Pugh, Josh Hartnett, Rami Malek, Kenneth Branagh and several others) found film to bump into on its release day and really, well here we are, the outcome will be interesting, as in a definition of counterprogramming the film runs into the....‘Barbie« by Greta Gerwig, starring Margo Robie and Ryan Gosling. This should be fun.
Nolan also co-wrote the screenplay based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel «American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer» by Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin. In production, of course, he is co-producing with Emma Thomas, via Syncopy, Universal distributes on July 21, 2023 (there goes Warner that is) and in the Englishman's excellent habit, the play is film, 65s and satisfying.
