Despite the unsettled weather, the celebrations marking our National Anniversary of March 25, 1821, were held with all due solemnity in Chora.
At 11:00 a.m., a Solemn Doxology was held at the Metropolitan Cathedral of the Crucifixion, presided over by His Eminence, the Most Reverend Metropolitan of Kythira and Antikythira, Mr.Seraphim, in the presence of local authorities and SYRIZA Member of the European Parliament Mr. Kostas Arvanitis, who has been on our island since Sunday, March 24.
This was followed by a memorial service in Stai’s central square and the laying of wreaths at the War Memorial by:
- MEP, Mr Konstantinos Arvanitis
- The Mayor of Kythera, Mr. Efstratios Harhalakis
- Chairman of the Property of Kythera and Antikythera, Mr Evangelos Venardos
- Commander of the Naval Observatory, Commander Mr. Emmanuel Ablianitis PN
- Commander of the Kythera Police Station, Lieutenant B’ Mr. Vasilios Antonopoulos
- Commander of the B’ Port Department of Kythera, Lieutenant Mrs. Niki Giannakopoulou SS
- Head of the Kythera P/K, Pyragos Mr. Spyridon Fountoulakis

A moment of silence.
The National Anthem is played.
The celebratory speech was delivered by the Mayor of Kythira, Mr. Efstratios Charhalakis.
This was followed by a variety of dance performances by the students of Kythira and a parade of male and female students.
The Deputy Mayor, Mr. Georgios Kominos, served as master of ceremonies, and, as in Potamos, the Potamos Philharmonic provided musical accompaniment for the events.
