This is announced by decision of the Minister of Environment and Energy, Theodoros Skylakakis, the international tender for the granting of hydrocarbon exploration and exploitation rights in the «A2» and «South of the Peloponnese,» in the southern Ionian Sea, has been suspended.
As noted by the Ministry of Environment and Energy, the announcement follows the Ministry’s acceptance of of the relevant expressions of interest for the above areas submitted by Chevron and HELLENiQ Energy.
This decision approves the tender notice issued by the Hellenic Hydrocarbon and Energy Resources Management Company (EDEYEP), which is published first in the Government Gazette and subsequently in the Official Journal of the European Union. The bidding period will last 90 days from the date of publication of the call for tenders in the Official Journal of the European Union.
It should be noted that the bidding process has already begun, as on January 23, Mr. Skylakakis has signed a decision specifying the exact boundaries of the maritime areas for which the right to explore and exploit hydrocarbons is being granted.
The Minister of Environment and Energy, Theodoros Skylakakis, stated on the occasion of the tender announcement: «This is a very important development toward ensuring our country’s energy security, as it reinforces efforts to explore the existence of significant natural gas reserves, which serve as the transition fuel for the energy transition—an area in which Greece is a pioneer. Furthermore, the interest shown by giants in the hydrocarbons sector—first ExxonMobil and now Chevron—demonstrates that our country is becoming an attractive destination for major energy investments.».
