The SYRIZA Members' Organization issued a statement on the occasion of the anniversary of the Polytechnic uprising.
The announcement follows:
«On the anniversary of the uprising .
The Polytechnic Uprising was not merely a mass uprising by the younger generation of that era against the Colonels’ dictatorship and its foreign backers. It was a revolt against fascism and in favor of democracy. It stemmed from the need to shape a better future, one in which everyone’s right to education and social justice would be fulfilled, and one that stood against all forms of authoritarianism.
All of this was encapsulated in the now-historic slogan «Bread, Education, Freedom.».
The call for a better future remains alive and defines the present. This is especially true in times when we face new forms of authoritarianism and oppression. We are confronted with a political power that plunders society to serve the interests of the few, while at the same time failing to respect the rule of law and the privacy of citizens.
The Polytechnic Uprising will forever serve as a reminder that every authoritarian regime falls in the face of citizens’ struggles for democracy and justice. The people have the power to shape their own future, free from those who do not respect freedoms and democracy—free from those who plunder their income. Democracy will prevail!
