The Mayor of Kythera, Mr. Efstratios Harhalakis, accompanied by the Head of Technical Services, Mr. Kostas Stathis, met with the Deputy Minister of Interior, responsible for Local Government, Mr. Theodoros Livanios, on Tuesday 24/10/2023.
The subject of the meeting was the progress of the projects funded by our Municipality from the “ANTONIS TRITSIS” programme, for which the tenders have been completed and the signing of the relevant contracts is expected (new desalination, new water supply networks, Vitzamanios, buildings of the Municipality of Mitaton). Also discussed was the burning issue of strengthening the Municipality with new permanent staff of administrative services, the need for institutional interventions for issues of organization and daily life of small island municipalities and the institutionalization of disciplinary control procedures for the Presidents of Communities who are absent from their duties for an unjustified long period of time, an issue that until today remains legally void, so that there are Presidents (all over Greece) who, while they normally receive the monthly travel expenses, however, do not perform the legally required duties.
Finally, in his capacity as President of the Islands Committee of the KEDE, he raised with the Minister the nationally important problem of the population shrinkage of the islands, asking for a special incentive programme on the part of the Government to increase the permanent population on the islands. On this issue, the Mayor will have a meeting with the Minister of Social Cohesion and Family, Mrs. Sophia Zacharaki.
