PRESS RELEASE
DEVELOPMENTS IN EDUCATION IN KYTHIRA
The Board of Directors of the Parents and Guardians Association of Kythera High School informs about the latest developments regarding the critical situation in the educational community of the island. Despite ongoing efforts, the shortage of teachers and vacancies at Kythera High School remain an unresolved problem. After a meeting with the school's principal, it was discovered that the vacant hours exceed 55 per week, with no progress in filling the vacancies. The latest information we have received indicates that appointments remain uncertain and inadequate for the needs of the school.
At the same time, the actions being taken in cooperation with the Municipality of Kythera are in progress. The Mayor has committed to organise a meeting with representatives of the Secondary Education and a representative of the government on 30 October, where the Association's demands will be presented. At the same time, the Mayor pledged to initiate the process of establishing a subsidy for hourly workers (substitutes with reduced working hours) to attract them, as their salaries are not sufficient for their stay on the island.
The Association, in cooperation with the students and the 15-member Council, supports the decision of the General Assembly to abstain from classes on 29 October, as a sign of protest against the continuing deterioration of education on our island. If there are no immediate and meaningful solutions, further mobilisations are planned.
At the same time, we have drawn up a petition, which will be submitted immediately to all the competent authorities, asking for the immediate filling of the vacancies and the restoration of the normal operation of the school. Communication with the media has already begun, both locally and nationally, in order to publicise the problem and put pressure on the relevant bodies for immediate intervention.
We call on all parents and the island's institutions to support the struggle of students and teachers, in order to fill the vacancies and ensure quality education.
The solidarity of the whole Kytherian Society is necessary and can achieve a lot.
