On Friday, June 23, 2023, at 9:00 p.m., the «follow your art» gallery invites you to Suzan Moxley’s exhibition titled «Palimpsest.».
Susan Moxley grew up in South Africa and came to Europe in the late 1970s to continue her studies in the fine arts.
He first visited Kythira in 1980, and since then he has been collecting handmade fabrics and yarns, materials «that, with the patina of time imprinted upon them, bear witness to the history of the place and the simplicity that characterized earlier times, when people valued things differently.» During one of his searches for such material, he found an old burlap sack, worn from use and patched with scraps from other garments. This sack possessed a functional beauty, with «layers of history» and references to the past, and this served as the primary inspiration for his work with fabrics.
Speaking about her exhibition, the artist describes: «I have created a series of «embroidered paintings» using fabrics I have collected over the years. These three-dimensional artworks have a certain fragility. I use the same sewing and mending techniques that I found in the fabrics; giving them a new form while also bringing the old stories into the present, always mindful of and respectful toward the women who originally crafted them.».
«Letters from an Island» is the title of a series of mixed-media works: pyrography, graphite, and collages made from pieces of old paper and letters from the island of Kythira. As with the series of fabric works, the collage series functions as a palimpsest of history and stories.
In both sections, the artist explores the concept of an object’s value, from the functionality in rejectionand ultimately to the selection of work of art.
