There are two churches dedicated to Saint Anne on Kythira, one in Chora and one in Dourianika, in the Maggounades area.
The church of Saint Anne in Chora is very old, and by 1699 it was already in ruins. At that time, the Venetians granted permission to establish a brotherhood, whose charter was approved and ratified by the Venetian governor. The founding members of the brotherhood were Bishop Nektarios Venieris of Kythira and other distinguished Kythirians and Cretans, includingThey fled, and their first priority was the reconstruction of the church. The church served as a community center and was one of the wealthiest parishes in the country. In 1854, the parishioners commissioned master builder Michalis Kypriotis of Kypriotianika to construct a 27-foot-tall bell tower “with the finest architectural craftsmanship.” In 1871, the church was renovated. Until the interwar period, it functioned as a separate parish. Today it is a chapel of the Metropolitan Cathedral of the Crucified One.
