Sotiris Tsiodras: With vaccines we have avoided 8,400 deaths

Greece, because of the vaccines against the coronavirus, it is estimated that has avoided 8,400 deaths and 5,560 hospitalisations in intensive care units since the start of the vaccination programme, said the Sotiris Tsiodras, during the emergency briefing by the Ministry of Health, at noon on Wednesday.

Mr. Tsiodras referred extensively to a study that has been conducted in major hospitals in the country, led by himself, on the antibodies and immunity of vaccinated and infected people and was accepted for publication.

See here in detail the announcements of Tsiodra:

As he explained, the study was conducted under the need for our country to have its own data on the effectiveness of vaccines and some scientific observations that lead to misinterpretations.

The professor stressed that, as vaccination coverage increases, the more vaccination coverage is cases and in vaccinated persons, emphasizing that that doesn't mean that vaccines don't work and they are not effective. The risk of vaccinated people getting sick from unvaccinated people is reduced by 11 times.

As he said, with vaccinations we have avoided about 8,400 deaths, 5,560 ICU admissions and 5,530 intubations according to the analysis of the vaccination campaign, from its launch until 11 October 2021.

It also stated that if had 95% of the population been vaccinated by mid-July, there would have been 1,200 fewer deaths in Greece.

Vaccines have excellent efficacy against severe disease at all ages, reduce the risk not only in older but also in younger age groups, Mr Tsiodras said.

There is a reduction of 91% or one-tenth from complete vaccination against death from Covid 19 for all ages, he emphasized.

For the Delta mutation

Mr Tsiodras referred to in the Delta mutation saying that pre-Delta vaccine efficacy was from 92% to 98%, then Delta, from 71% to 96%. This means that the effectiveness of the vaccine is maintained in the «post-Delta» period.

According to him, there is also high efficacy for ICU hospitalizations in the post-Delta period, from 91 to 98%. Also, the vaccines show excellent efficacy at all ages for disease. «We have avoided about 8,400 deaths in our country with vaccinations,» the professor stressed.
