In a press release issued on Tuesday afternoon the major opposition faction of the major opposition «First the Man» accuses implicitly but clearly the Municipal Authority for the accident with the garbage truck, according to which they estimate that the responsibility of the Municipality is missing material in work from previous restoration in this section of the roadway. The press release follows.
«This morning we woke up to a picture from Kapsali where a municipal garbage truck balances like a good acrobat between land and sea. The roadway moving to Piso Yalos gave way, resulting in about half of the vehicle hanging over the sea. Fortunately we suffered no human loss.
We will not dwell on the Mayor's shameful statements in today's city council meeting about human error, that the driver should not have been driving the vehicle at that point and that an investigation will be conducted into the causes of the accident, implicitly but clearly blaming the driver of the garbage truck. We stand by the municipal employee and are against any accusation against him.
But this accident is very serious. It is serious because instead of the municipal refuse collection vehicle it could have been a bus with schoolchildren, it could have been a bus with tourists, it could have been a family's passenger vehicle. It could be a family taking a walk in the back Yale, it could be a child. And it's extremely serious because we could even have human casualties.
But this accident is very serious for another reason. About two years ago, our party had strongly protested about a direct award of a 147-cubic-metre concrete supply with the place of performance of the service being Piso Gialos Kapsali, at the point where today the roadway sank, in order to close a hole that had opened up in the roadway. Of course, with 147 cubic meters, about 50 meters of road could be cemented over 3 meters high and one meter wide (that's how much we are talking about!!!). We were informed by eyewitnesses that only 3 barrels, i.e. 27 cubic metres, had gone to this particular spot. We reacted and asked the Municipal Authority. The Municipal Authority replied that the concrete was dropped at this point and committed that we would visit it and be shown where the concrete went.
We are still waiting for the call to find the concrete.
Today it was proved in the most unequivocal way where the stones were.».
