The last parliamentary debate of the party leaders before the European elections of 9 June 2024 has begun in the plenary session of the Parliament.
The subject of today's debate, which is being held on the initiative of SYRIZA-PS's chairman, S. Famellos, is «dealing with the issue of accuracy and the taxation of excess profits accumulated by oligopolies to the detriment of the Greek economy and society».
The debate will begin with the Prime Minister's speech, followed by the speeches of the chairmen of the parliamentary groups and one or two ministers. This will be followed by a second round of speeches by the leaders and the debate will conclude with a speech by the Prime Minister.
«Mr Mitsotakis must apologize and tell us why Greece is second from the bottom in purchasing power at European level. We are slowly reaching the last one Bulgaria. Why do we have the second highest food inflation after Malta? It is not possible for multinationals to have more expensive products only in Greece. Should Mr Mitsotakis also answer us. why it does not tax the excess profits of refineries and energy, while Europe is calling for their taxation. And why does it not reduce VAT on food and the Special Consumption Tax if the Commission proposes it?» Socrates Famellos speaking yesterday on ERT
«Mr Mitsotakis is very Press because the whole society knows that he himself is responsible for the accuracy. More than 80% citizens say they will vote based on product prices. He is afraid of the “letter” that citizens will send him through the ballot boxes and for this reason he sends the letter to Mrs. Ursula von der Linen, »continued the President of the CO of SYRIZA - PS, anticipating today's debate in Parliament.
It is recalled that the opposition party had also submitted a relevant legislative proposal at the beginning of the month.
In proposal for a law 12 articles, submitted by SYRIZA-PS, outlines its comprehensive and fully costed plan for tackling the problem. Among other things, it includes the reduction of indirect taxes -VAT and VAT- and the imposition of a cap on corporate profits throughout the entire line of import, production and transport of products. The reductions will be financed by the taxing excess profits to oil companies, energy providers and banks.
As noted yesterday by Voula Kechagia, all the proposals which are included in the SYRIZA-P.S. programme which is constantly updated are costed.
The spokeswoman of SYRIZA-PS reiterated that the programme of the opposition party provides for reduction of ENFIA, but the very large properties will be taxed. «They will tax the dividends which are taxed at a tax rate of 5%, while a family income of 30,000 euros is taxed at a very high rate. There will be one-time overtaxation of the banks' excess profits, extraordinary taxation, to the amount of 90%, and also taxation of refineries and revenues their.
Also, in relation to the VAT, we've been suggesting to the government all this time reduce. Many European countries have implemented it with great success and it is also a direction of the European Union from April 2022. From VAT and indirect taxes, the government had in 2022 and 2023 an overperformance in taxes, excess tax revenue, of 4 billion euros.».
