The square breathes history!

«It is unthinkable that a few and perhaps unthinking people should decide to abolish the parade on the River.» Read Cosmas Megalokonomou's intervention on the issue that arose with the City's decision to abolish the River Parade.

One of the most historic places of Kythera is the Potamos Square. It was created with popular participation when the Potamites and the inhabitants of the surrounding villages tore down the walls of the Laomitic Tower, a symbol of Venetian power, at the time when the Republican French overthrew the Venetian rule. In the open space that was spread out, that is, in the Square, the Tree of Liberty was planted. There took root the Bazaar that brought progress. There the celebrations and festivals for Kyra Panagia, our Lady of Lariot. There all the heroic events of our land and our nation were celebrated. All history passed through the Square. The first schools were built in the Square, but it was in the Square that the scolarians celebrated and demonstrated their labours. There everything. There the bust of the glorious General Panos Koroneios was erected and generations of children paraded before him and on his pedestal heroic poems were recited. School parades on national holidays are held at the most historical monuments of each place, so that the young people can feel our history, so that they can feel that they too are a continuation of it. It is unthinkable that a few and perhaps unthinking people should decide to abolish the parade on the River. From the most historic square in our country. It is unthinkable that parents, grandparents and grandparents will not enjoy this year's children and grandchildren marching and reciting in the place where years ago they themselves did so. In their junior high and high school years, all these children will proudly march and honor the Capital, the Country. But everything in its own time. When I was digging up this poem the only thing that didn't occur to me was that I would write this note.

To General Panos Koroneos
This marble sees, punches and ponders
has a heart to rejoice, a soul to grieve
The form of the Coronaius that we have in our minds
in the joys of our nation to listen to our children
proudly singing our national anthem
the General rising from his deep sleep
pointing his sword at the heroine Crete
the Arcadian that the eagles of Psiloritis have holy it.
To proclaim: «There's only one thing that fits into Leftheria...
Do not be afraid to see it written in blood.»
