Η Monica Vitti, the Italian actress who brought his work to life Michelangelo Antonioni, died at the age of 90, as announced by Culture Minister Dario Franceschini. According to Corriere della Sera, the actress, who had been suffering from Alzheimer’s disease, died on Wednesday.
«Farewell, Monica Vitti, farewell to the queen of Italian cinema. Today is a day of great sorrow; a great artist and a great Italian woman has been lost,» the minister said in his statement. Walter Veltroni, former mayor of Rome and film critic, announced the news in a post on Twitter. «Roberto Russo, her partner all these years, has asked me to share that Monica Vitti is no longer with us. I do so with great sadness, affection, and nostalgia,» he wrote on his account on the popular platform.
