Recently, a discussion has been started about the Home. I am not commenting on what was written and what was commented on. I am simply stating what the concept of Domestic Assets and the Commission that manages them is. Non-private property in Greece is divided into two categories. A) Public property, which is owned by the Greek State, but its management is not carried out by a ministry, but is entrusted to the Public Land Service (responsible for its protection) and the Public Land Company (responsible for its financial management). And B) In the Domestic Property of Kythera and Antikythera which is owned by the Municipality of Kythera and Antikythera and its management (protection and financial management) is exercised by a Committee elected by the elected councillors of the Local Government.
The first case concerns almost all of Greece and the second only Kythera and Antikythera due to, really, unique circumstances. The duties and individual laws are identical as far as the practice is concerned in both cases. In other words, the Commission for the Domestic Property of Kythera and Antikythera does what in the rest of Greece the Land Service and the State Land Company do. The question is which of the two is better for a place. The fact that in Europe the prevailing regime is similar to that of domestic property provides the answer. In my opinion its model should be extended to the whole of Greece. The reason is simple. Non-private property can be better managed by society, which knows the local needs, rather than by a central body managed by Public Servants.
The way the Commission is elected (indirectly by the People) cannot objectively be accused of being undemocratic. If there are objections as to whether a person is suitable or not, there should be a parallel self-criticism, because our vote, (or the vote of many of us) gives the power to move the strings.
Conclusion: The institution of Domestic Property is something unique and the best thing for our country. It is up to our own merit how and how much we use it. In other words, which persons are worthy to be entrusted with it.
