«Painting Journeys» by Daphne Petrocheilou

At the Potamos Cultural Center in Kythira

«Every day, we walk through a world full of mystery and meaning. Stories of the past, the present, and the future are all around us, whether we realize it or not. Sometimes, even if only fleetingly, a story touches us and invites us to explore it. It might be the way the light falls or the movement of a body; for a moment we catch a glimpse of a story, and through our attention, something new emerges. The works in this section were created in Potamos and the surrounding area: the trees, the houses, and the people I encounter every day, but who, for a unique moment in time and space, reveal themselves as the protagonists of a story that is entirely their own.».

For years now, Daphne Petrocheilou has been a consistent and valuable presence in the exhibition program of the follow your art gallery. Through her participation in these exhibitions, her work has become intrinsically linked to the contemporary visual arts dialogue unfolding in Kythira. Born in London and raised in Tanzania, Greece, and the United Kingdom, Petrohilos studied painting at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. She has exhibited her work in the United States, Great Britain, Ireland, and many European countries. In 1992, she visited Kythira in search of her family’s ancestral home. That visit evolved into a lifelong connection, and the island has since become the place where she lives, creates, and draws constant inspiration.

This new body of work is the result of her daily connection to the place. The artist turns her gaze to everything that seems familiar and self-evident. A garden, a lemon tree, a family gathering are transformed into opportunities for reflection and storytelling. Her compositions strike a balance between observation and memory, capturing not only what she sees, but above all what she senses beneath the surface of things.
