The 94th Academy Awards ceremony, the premier awards of the American film industry, had it all. It featured three outstanding comedians— Wanda Sykes, Amy Schumer, and Regina Hall, who brought a particularly joyful and unique touch; it had upsets among the favorites; it had very moving acceptance speeches; but it also had a particularly awkward moment.
American superstar Beyoncé opened the show, while the Kodak Theater was packed with movie stars who returned to the red carpet “in person,” unlike what happened last year due to the coronavirus pandemic.
The biggest upset occurred in the Best Picture category, as “CODA” emerged as the winner, leaving behind the night’s heavy favorite, “The Power of the Dog.”.
In the other major categories, Jane Campion won the Oscar for Best Director for “The Power of the Dog,” Will Smith won the Oscar for Best Actor for ’King Richard,” and Jessica Chastain won the Oscar for Best Actress for “The Eyes of Tammy Faye.”.
Among the most moving moments of the evening was the presentation of the Best Supporting Actress award to Ariana DeBose for her performance in *West Side Story*, as she is the first openly queer woman to win an acting Oscar, as well as the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor going to Troy Kotsur of *CODA*, who became the second deaf actor in history to win an Oscar (the first was Marlee Matlin (for *Children of a Lesser God*), who co-stars with him in *CODA*).
The first eight Oscars were presented before the live show began, a move that was criticized by many filmmakers and industry organizations.
The most awkward moment of the night? An unprecedented incident took place when the night’s big winner, Will Smith, stormed onto the stage in a fit of rage and slapped Chris Rock, who was presenting the award for Best Documentary. This was prompted by a joke the comedian had made about his wife, Jada Pinkett Smith.
It should also be noted that a minute of silence was observed for Ukraine. During this brief interruption of the American film festival, messages appeared on the giant screens urging viewers to send humanitarian aid, listing the Ukrainians« needs for basic supplies, including »food,« »medical care« and medicine, or even »blankets.« »We ask you to help Ukraine in any way you can,” another message stated.
