All Together: Demanding the resignation of Deputy Mayor Kominos

The municipal faction of the major opposition «All Together - Kythira - Antikythera» asks for the resignation of Mr. Kominos, Deputy Mayor of Sanitation. Read below:

Garbage collection: P. Megalokonomos - If you can't, quit!

Garbage, garbage everywhere and garbage trucks nowhere. This is the situation that the residents of Kythera are experiencing today, just before the peak of the tourist season and while the high temperatures for the season are worsening the situation. In many cases the collection is carried out every 15 days, while it is common for rubbish to be collected once a week. As far as recycling is concerned, it seems to be a well-kept secret...

The problem was raised with intensity at the extraordinary meeting of the City Council on June 20. The whole of our party attributed responsibility to the Municipal Authority and especially to the Mayor and the responsible Deputy Mayor.

No one was convinced by the funny excuses put forward by the Deputy Mayor Mr.Kominos. Everyone accepts that there is a question of protecting public health, while the image of our islands is brutally affected just before the peak of the tourist season.

Because the situation is now too serious, our faction demanded immediate solutions, while the Councillor Mr.Panagiotis Megalokonomos asked for the resignation of Mr.Kominos.

It is worth remembering that not even a month passed (May 26) since the Mayor's self-memorial report, which informed us that he had already completed 10 years in his position and that «at the beginning of our third term, we see with absolute satisfaction all the projects we have financed being completed and with optimism we expect the start of construction of new major infrastructure projects».

Big talk is fine, Mr. Mayor, but someone has to pick up the trash...

The faction of Mr.Harhalakis (due to electoral law) was re-elected to the administration of the Municipality of Kythera-Antikythera last year. For 10 years it has not solved the problem of waste collection and management. He had the opportunity to recruit sufficient permanent staff in the cleaning sector and he did not do so. It has tried every year to fill the vacancies with contract workers.

The patience of all of us has run out. If they can't quit, they should quit. They have nothing to blame our islands, our residents and those who honour us by choosing us as their holiday destination.
