Following the unanimous decision of the Kythera Municipal Council on June 30, 2025 for the extension of the runway at the island's airport, the «All Together, Kythera-Antikythera» faction issued a press release, in which its leader, Zacharias Souris, speaks of a historic moment for the place.
As noted in his statement, the decision is the result of social mobilization and institutional claim, and welcomes the support received by the proposal from councillors of all factions. Mr. Suris said that his faction submitted the proposal through the procedure provided for by the City Council's rules, accompanied by citizens' signatures, and that it was eventually voted for by all members of the body. Following the unanimous decision of 30 June 2025 for the extension of the runway at Kythera Airport
Yesterday's unanimous decision of the Kythera Municipal Council is a historic moment for our island.
It proves that when society is activated, when there is a well-founded demand and institutional persistence, the obvious can be put into practice.
Even though months late, the Mayor was forced to bring the issue to a vote, after having previously ruled it out in every way. Finally, under the weight of the common demand, he was dragged, from our initiative to utilize the City Council Rules and the collection of citizen signatures and to vote for the proposal that until yesterday was downplayed. This is a victory for the collective, not for power.
With this decision, we are sending a clear message to all relevant bodies:
The extension of the runway and the upgrading of Kythera Airport is an urgent need.
For the dignity of the inhabitants, for the safety of flights, for the sustainable development of the place.
I sincerely thank the citizens who co-signed the proposal, the councillors of all factions who voted in favour, and the Cerigo Association for their steadfast, responsible and informed support.
