The third meeting of the Kythera Municipal Council for 2025, held on Saturday 22 February at 13.00, had as its only topic the election of a new President of the Local Community of Karavas, after the sad event of the untimely death of Kosmas Tzortzopoulos. The process turned into a heated political scene, with legal challenges and a strong disagreement over the voting procedure.
From the beginning of the meeting, members of the minor opposition raised objections to the election procedure. The main disagreement concerned whether the vote should be secret or open. In the end, after some debate and a final recommendation by the President, Mr Kapsalis, after the procedure had been briefly suspended, the body voted by a majority to hold an open vote.
It is recalled that the residents of the community had previously held a general meeting on 30 January, where they had expressed their wish that the new president should come from the party of the deceased. The resolution adopted, according to its supporters, was a democratic expression of the community and had to be respected.
