He passed away on Monday morning at the hospital in Rhodes, where he had been receiving treatment for the past few weeks, Nektarios Santorinios, SYRIZA’s Member of Parliament for the Dodecanese and former minister.
Nektarios Santorinios fought a tough but unequal battle with cancer over the past two years, but unfortunately he did not survive.
He was born in 1972 in Rhodes and was originally from Symi. He was married to Matina Hatzimarkou and is the father of two children.
He was a member of the Central Committee of SYRIZA from 2012 to 2013 and was re-elected at the 2016 Congress.
He was elected MP for the Dodecanese with SYRIZA in the January and September 2015 and 2019 elections. On 5 November 2016, he became Deputy Minister of Shipping and Island Policy in the government of Alexis Tsipras. On 29 August 2018, he was appointed Deputy Minister of Shipping and Island Policy, a position he held until 9 July 2019. He was re-elected as a Member of Parliament in the 2019 elections.
He studied chemical engineering at the National Technical University of Athens. and gained many years of professional experience in both the private and public sectors, primarily in environmental studies and consulting services. Since 2000, he has worked at the Planning Office of the Municipality of Rhodes, where his main responsibilities have included project and action studies, as well as proposals for the inclusion of actions in European programs (2nd CSF, Third CSF, NSRF, Interreg, URBAN, etc.) and national (Theseus, EPTA, Green Fund, etc.) co-funded programs.
He served as Vice President and Secretary of the Board of Directors of the Union of Civil Servant Engineers with University Degrees of the Dodecanese and is a member of the delegation to the Panhellenic Federation of EMYDAS. Since his school years, he has been active as a citizen on the Left; later becoming a member of SYN, and from 2008 through 2014 he served as Coordinator of the SYRIZA Prefectural Committee for the Southern Dodecanese. He served as a Regional Councilor for the South Aegean (2012–2014) with the «Citizens Against the Tide» faction and a member of the Economic Committee of the South Aegean Region (2013–2014).
