9.00-11.00 & 10.45-13.00 : Chora Castle

The Ephorate of Antiquities of Piraeus & Islands, the Piraeus Culture, Sports and Youth Organization through the Municipal Theatre of Piraeus are collaborating, designing and implementing the educational programme «From Museum to Theatre. Tracing the Theatrical Act of Ancient Tragedy».

Thirty distinguished scientists and artists from the fields of archaeology, museology, theatre and performing arts have been involved in the design and implementation of the programme.

It is a new institution in museum education and theatre education.
The main aim of the programme is to familiarise secondary school students with ancient tragedy, the modern language of theatre and theatrical practice.

The educational activity is structured in three modules.

At the beginning of the programme there is a discussion with the students about the function of both the theatrical space and tragedy as a dramatic genre. Among other things, an introduction is given to the birth of the theatre and its function as a vehicle of socio-political education in ancient Athens.

Then the students attend the performance «Antigone» by Sophocles, translated by George Blanas and directed by Dimitris Lalos.

At the end, participants take part in experiential activities with the creators and actors of the show.

During the training action, participants will receive supporting educational material in printed and digital form, while training seminars will be held for teachers participating in the programme in order to further exploit the material.

The educational action will take place during the months of November and December a) in archaeological sites on the islands of the Piraeus Region (Kythera, Hydra, Spetses, Poros, Galatas of Troizina, Agistri, Aegina, Salamina), b) at the Ancient Theatre of Zeus, at the Archaeological Museum of Piraeus and at the Ancient Theatre of Evonymos, in Alimos and c) at the Municipal Theatre of Piraeus.

Antigone

Sophocles« »Antigone«, one of the leading texts of ancient Greek literature, will be presented in the framework of the educational programme »From Museum to Theatre. Tracing the Theatrical Act of Ancient Tragedy" in the excellent translation by George Blanas.

The direction is signed by Dimitris Lalos who notes for the performance:

«A dusty landscape. A devastated people after a merciless civil war. Values are under test. The new governor will make a tragic decision. Not to bury the invader who is, however, his relative. All the people are silent about his decision. Except one. Antigone. She will do what customary law requires and bury her brother. A titanic battle between Creon and Antigone begins. A battle that echoes through the centuries to this day. Sophocles» iconic play continues to ponder to this day whether the legal is also just. The consequences for the heroes will be devastating but also profoundly redemptive. In the end we will understand that the world is a cliff and man is a cliff on the edge of a cliff."
