Σύμφωνα με την αρχική εκτίμηση του Γεωδυναμικού Ινστιτούτου για το μέγεθος του σεισμού, πρόκειται για 5 Ρίχτερ.
Η σεισμική δόνηση σημειώθηκε ανοιχτά των Κυθήρων και συγκεκριμένα 46 χλμ δυτικά-νοτιοδυτικά του νησιού, και είχε εστιακό βάθος 67,2 χλμ.
