The marina in Diakofti and the development of ports

There has been an interesting discussion recently regarding the development of the island’s ports. As Kythera.News, the Municipality of Kythera has already applied for several grants for upgrade projects at the ports of Kapsali, Avlemonas, Diakofto, Agia Pelagia, and Pl. Ammos. As of the time of this writing, the municipal authorities have not disclosed the current status of most of these projects. Perhaps there will be an update on this matter in the near future.

In any case, the planned upgrade of the port facilities will also attract the interest of investors. One such example is the port of Diakofto, which, following the rumored resolution of the issue that had arisen regarding the forest maps, appears poised to set the entire region on a path to growth.

Along with the discussion about the ports, there is increasing talk of building a marina in Diakofto. In fact, some are speculating that the intense real estate investment interest in the village of Diakofto may be linked to the prospect of building a large marina and upgrading the island’s main portin the near future.

It seems impossible for the municipal government to undertake investments of this nature and scale, given that it has neither the infrastructure nor the staff to meet such demands. If, in a few years, we see mergers and subsequent privatizations of the port authorities, in accordance with the central government’s plans, it is likely that we will see several scenarios unfold in the Diakofto area.

A port authority that has merged with those of Laconia and been transformed into a corporation might create the conditions necessary to attract investor interest.

For example, the port of Diakofto, together with the islet of Makrykithira, will be an attractive «investment opportunity» due to its strategic geographical location. It is situated at the western gateway to the Aegean Sea, in the Kythira Sea, and could provide a safe mooring and refueling station for recreational boats and cruise ships for most of the year. The islet offers the potential to develop a state-of-the-art marina, hotel facilities and vacation homes, as well as parks, recreational areas, sports facilities, and dining options.

Such a scenario raises significant debate, in which the local community must have the final say. Certainly, there are issues related to environmental and urban planning conditions, as well as the impact on the local economy and the island’s tourism industry.

Based on this scenario, then, there are some questions that would be interesting to answer:

Does the Local Property Commission have an opinion on such a development? Would it grant such large tracts of land for a major private investment, and under what conditions? What economic benefit could it derive, and in what form? How would the Municipality of Kythira view this prospect? Could both organizations, as local government bodies, ensure compliance with the conditions mentioned above? How many jobs could such a project provide during its construction and operation? Furthermore, could there be a framework in which the tourism-related upgrading of the port and the village of Diakofto would go hand in hand with the development of the state-run airport? Synergy is essential in such investments. And, by extension, it is essential that the entire island benefit.

However we look at it right now, the Diakofto scenario still seems remote but not impossible. And it should be a priority for local political forces and authorities to first determine what the local community and economy want and need, what plan can be drawn up, and what benefits the area will gain. It is therefore quite interesting to know what might happen, before it happens, so that it happens the right way. Such a dialogue is necessary, even if, for some, design and planning seem difficult and impossible tasks.
