Our fellow countryman Manolis Mageiros, a resident of Drymonas, passed away at the age of 87 on December 16, 2021. He was born on March 19, 1935, in Alexandria, Egypt, which at the time had a thriving Kythirian community. He attended the Averof Gymnasium in Alexandria. He was admitted with honors to the Department of Chemistry at the University of Alexandria and subsequently transferred to the University of Athens. He worked as a chemist in the wine industry and later in the pharmaceutical industry (Pfizer, Dow Chemical), and in the final years of his career, he worked as an investment consultant for the Christos Panagiotopoulos Group.
He spent the rest of his life in Kythira with his wife, Tasoula, who had passed away seven years earlier. Together they had two children, Elena and Spyros. His daughter Elena bid him farewell with the following message:
«My beloved, you went to find your diva… you couldn’t bear to be away from her any longer… seven years was too long…”
We'll always love you…
We'll be thinking of you all the time….
We are who we are because you made sure of it…
We are continuing your work in your beloved homeland, Kythira, just as you taught us to love it so much…
“Oh, is that you?”
“Yes, Dad”
“What about the wines?”
“They’re growing up, Dad”
“What about the olives?”
“We don’t have any olives this year—there was a heat wave this summer.”
“And in Drymonas?”
“Not even in Drymonas, Dad”
“When are we going to Paliópoli?”
“Next week, Dad, I hope the weather is nice. I love you so much, Dad.”
“I love you, too”
“We’ll talk tomorrow”
”Are you sure it's tomorrow?"
“Yes, tomorrow. Good night.”
That morning, Lela helped him get into his armchair, near the fireplace. He ate his breakfast… and then fell asleep….
We will accompany him on his final journey, so that he may rest alongside his beloved Tasoula in Drymonas, the land of his ancestors, on Tuesday at 3:00 p.m. at Agia Marina.
Instead of wreaths, for anyone who wishes, we will make a small donation to the Kythira General High School…
»Sleep well, my dad..."
Kythera. News extends its condolences to his family and loved ones.
