Intervention regarding power outages – What was the response of the Hellenic Electricity Distribution Network Operator (DEDDIE)?
Our municipal faction, «All Together, Kythira – Antikythira,» feeling a sense of responsibility toward citizens, sent an official letter of protest to the Hellenic Electricity Distribution Network Operator (DEDDIE) on September 23, 2025., action that should primarily have been taken by the municipal authority, regarding the repeated and sudden power cuts affecting our island. The letter was forwarded to the Public Power Corporation, the Energy Regulatory Authority, the Consumer Ombudsman, and the Municipality of Kythira. In our intervention, we urgently requested a technical inspection of the network, written and documented information on the causes of the continuous outages, the presentation of a specific maintenance and network reliability improvement schedule, as well as full information on the compensation procedures for citizens and businesses that have suffered damage.
Today, we received the response from HEDNO by mail, which was issued on September 25, 2025. It states that the recent outages were momentary and within internationally permissible limits, and were attributed to a combination of specific weather conditions, such as increased humidity, strong winds, and the transfer of sea water to the networks. The same response emphasizes that consumers must take care to protect their sensitive electrical appliances by using appropriate systems.
Our party will continue to monitor the issue and intervene institutionally, demanding effective solutions for the smooth and reliable supply of electricity to Kythira. Citizens have a right to high-quality services, and the competent authorities must ensure their protection.
