The missing couple has finally been found safe and sound. A Coast Guard operation to locate them had been underway since yesterday in the waters off Kalon Limenon, south of Heraklion.
Ultimately, according to reliable information from the Athens-Macedonian News Agency (ANA-MPA), the boat was swept out to sea, and the man managed to moor it inside a cave, where the two missing persons remained. Today, given the improved weather conditions, the man managed to swim to the Koudouma Monastery, from where he notified the Coast Guard. The woman stayed behind to avoid putting herself at risk while attempting to reach the Koudouma Monastery, which is quite a distance from the cave.
The authorities arrived at the monastery immediately, took the man into custody—he is being transported for medical examinations—and at this moment, a boat is at the cave that essentially served as the two people’s refuge, to pick up the woman and transport her safely to shore.
Both local residents and those involved in the rescue operation are calling it a miracle, given the conditions that have prevailed in the area since yesterday due to the winds, and the man’s successful effort to make his way from the cave to the Koudouma Monastery.
