The exodus of Thessaloniki residents to the region for the celebration of Easter continues today, Good Friday, and is expected to gradually peak.
Traffic on the national road networks connecting Thessaloniki with Katerini, Kavala, Serres and Halkidiki is progressing smoothly so far, with the authorities taking increased traffic measures.
During the last 24 hours (M. Thursday) 14,782 vehicles passed through the toll of N. Malgara (exit stream), while 14,205 vehicles entered Thessaloniki.
Particularly increased throughout the Holy Week is the traffic at the intercity bus station «Macedonia», where buses depart with occupancy rates reaching almost 100%, especially to Athens, but also to popular destinations, Easter and non-Easter, such as Corfu, Volos, Ioannina, Kastoria, Kavala, etc. According to the management of KTEL «Macedonia», where there is an increased demand, extraordinary routes are planned.
Particularly increased measures are taken throughout the Easter period by the Thessaloniki Traffic Police Directorate, which is on the road both along the national and provincial road network and on major roads at the exits and entrances of the city.
As stated in an announcement by the Traffic Police, apart from the usual checks that will be carried out in conspicuous places, checks will also be carried out using conventional service vehicles, in order to wake up drivers who do not comply with the rules of the Highway Code, but also to create a climate of conscious compliance.
For the area of the prefecture of Thessaloniki today, M. Friday, from 6 in the morning until 4 in the afternoon, the traffic of trucks is prohibited in the exit stream of the highways Thessaloniki - N. Moudania (from the air bridge of Thermi to the junction N. Moudania), Thessaloniki - Kavala (from X.T. 11+340 to X.T. 97+550) and Thessaloniki - Polygyros, (E.O.16), from the Thermi flyover to the boundaries of the Thessaloniki Region (Agia Anastasia junction). Similar restrictions will apply on Easter Monday from 12 noon to 10 p.m. on the incoming flow of the above roads.
