DOCUMENTARY SCREENING IN CONNECTION WITH THE
WORLD MIGRATORY BIRD DAY
To mark World Migratory Bird Day, KIPA’s second event took place in Potamos with great success, marking its shift toward new goals—namely, highlighting the natural wealth of birdlife found on Kythira (the first was this summer’s children’s theater production of Aristophanes’ *The Birds*).
Just as before, we are once again receiving support from the Hellenic Ornithological Society for this event, and we intend to continue our collaboration with it in every possible area (research, education, interactive/tourism, etc.)
Truly, if we open our eyes and look around us, every month of the year, we’ll see a magical world of birds, since Our island is one of the most important migratory bird corridors in the eastern Mediterranean. So far, we know that of the 407 bird species that cross Greece on their way to warm Africa, 230 species can be spotted here in our region during the fall and spring. Some find temporary refuge from the dangers they face, others decide to stay permanently on our islands, and some engage in «seasonal tourism»—that is, they gather strength and fly off to distant lands. Europe’s smallest bird, the Wren, has been recorded here; the largest population of Black-winged Kites has been observed, and on Kalamos, “so many quails that they blocked out the sun.”.
The screening took place as part of the initiative «From the Cinema to Action for the Cyclades» | «From Movies to Cyclades Movement,» implemented by the Cyclades Preservation Fund (CPF) in collaboration with ANEMON Productions | CINEDOC Island and supported by The Hellenic Initiative (THI).
Local organizations KIPA, the «Portokalia» Association, and the Potamos Beautification and Cultural Association, as well as the Sunday Hikers with the one we all love Frank, filled the hall and served as the local ambassadors for this initiative in Kythira.
