By decision of the Regional Governor of Attica Nikos Hardalias and after extensive consultation with the Civil Protection and EMY, the Friday 5 December will remain closed all public and private schools of Primary and Secondary Education of the basin, in view of the wave Byron weather.
Also, night schools will be closed today, Thursday 4 December, in the basin.
This decision was taken to ensure the safety of the school community - both students and staff - by preventing the risks that could arise from travelling to and from schools. In addition, it was taken into account that many pupils, teachers and parents may have to cross areas of Attica where problems due to bad weather remain severe.
In his message to the citizens, the Regional Governor Nikos Chardalias stated the following: «The Civil Protection has put Attica on Red Alert in view of the bad weather Byron, which is developing into a high intensity phenomenon. All meteorological models indicate that from 11 pm on Thursday night until the early hours of Friday morning, we will have intense weather phenomena in the basin.
The safety of our children is a non-negotiable priority.
We know that the phenomena will not affect every area of the basin with the same intensity. But we must operate with the greatest possible precaution. We must anticipate and not run behind developments. Based on scientific data - not on risk.
We understand that this decision may upset the planning of the day for many families - but it is a choice of responsibility. And I want to thank our teachers, parents and students in advance for their understanding.
Our aim is to protect human lives, avoid unnecessary travel and allow our services to operate seamlessly when needed.
We are in the field, in full operational readiness. Throughout Attica, crews, machinery and forces of the Civil Protection of the Region are on alert. For our part, we are ready to assist wherever and whenever we are requested, following the operational plan of the competent Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection.
We continue to monitor the development of the bad weather hour by hour. We are acting with calm, with a plan and with the absolute priority on people. And so we will continue.».
It should be noted that by order of the Regional Governor, from early Thursday morning all the project machinery and the competent staff of the Region are on 24-hour alert at predetermined points throughout the Basin, in order to take immediate action on the field, if requested, assisting the Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection which has overall responsibility for planning to deal with bad weather.
