The calendar reads July 31, 1628. We are in the Ionian Islands during the Venetian occupation. The social classes are as follows: nobles (nobili), bourgeois (civili), and commoners (popolari).
While history speaks of the implementation of the Venetian ‘Golden Book’ system, which enshrined the privileges of the masters, the 1628 uprising was a response to the inhumane pressure faced by the lower social classes. Today, we are examining the causes and triggers behind the popular uprising, those involved in it in every way, and its outcome.
This is a significant milestone in the history of Zakynthos and Greece, marking not only popular discontent but also efforts to overturn the social structures that benefited only a select few.
