Historic US-Iran direct talks in Pakistan

The long-awaited peace negotiations between the United States and Iran have officially begun in Islamabad in an attempt to end the wider military conflict. This is the first direct top-level meeting between the two countries since the 1979 Islamic Revolution.

The Climate of the Negotiations

Under draconian security measures, the delegations meet behind closed doors. A Pakistani official confirmed that the talks are progressing positively and there is a possibility that they could continue on Sunday.

USA: The US side is represented by J.D. Vance, Steve Whitcoff and Jared Kushner, supported by teams of experts. Vice President Vance said he was willing to extend a hand if there was good faith on the other side.

Iran: In the capital of Pakistan, the Speaker of the Parliament Mohammad Ghalibaf and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi are in the capital. Iran is coming with goodwill, but, as Gallibaf pointed out, without confidence in Washington.

Pakistan: The crucial role of mediator has been assumed by the Pakistani army chief, Asim Munir.

International reactions and military moves

Alongside diplomatic efforts, geopolitical developments in the wider region remain rapid:

Straits of Hormuz: Two US destroyers crossed the strategic straits, becoming the first US warships to pass through the area since the start of the war. At the same time, Donald Trump said the process of clearing the straits is beginning.

French Intervention: French President Emmanuel Macron contacted his Iranian counterpart Massoud Pezzekian, calling for a substantial de-escalation, the restoration of free navigation in Hormuz and full respect of the ceasefire in Lebanon.

Tehran's position: President Pezzeskian expressed his full support for the Iranian negotiating team, assuring citizens that the mission will bravely defend national interests.

Hammering continues in Lebanon

The crisis in Lebanon deepens as Israel continues its military operations.

Victims: The Lebanese Ministry of Health reports 357 dead from the recent Israeli attacks, warning that this tragic toll is not final.

Postpone a Trip: Under the weight of these developments, Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam postponed his planned trip to the United States and the United Nations in order to remain in Beirut and oversee the government's work inside the country.
