At least seven arrests have been made by the police in the west India, following the complaint of a 16-year-old girl that she was the victim of repeated rape by hundreds of men, in a gruesome case that adds to the acute problem sexual violence in the country.
According to a statement issued by the Child Welfare Commission of India (CWC) on November 11, the girl, who is homeless, testified that she was raped by 400 men in Beed area of Maharashtra state and gave the names of two policemen.
According to the chairman of the committee, the girl was begging in bus stop when three men attacked her and forced her to surrender.
Although the number of rapes and rapists is extremely difficult to confirm. The girl was able to identify at least 25 people.
In fact, the girl said she tried to file a police report against a man who beat her, however, the police officers refused to register her.
Police in the area, who declined to comment on the latest complaint, said a file has been opened on eight people -including a minor- on charges of rape against a minor.
The girl told police that she was Married from the age of 13 with a 33-year-old man who sexually abused her, while she was also sexually assaulted by Father as a result of which she had to leave both houses and was forced to sleep at the bus stop.
Women's rights activist Yogita Bhayana described the event as «the most tragic (rape) case in history».
«The girl was tortured daily,» he said, adding that the police failed to protect her.
According to India's National Crime Records Bureau, more than 28,000 rape cases were reported in 2020, almost one every 18 minutes. However, experts believe the actual number is much higher.
