The figures on the number of deaths at each hospital by health region, as reported by the POEDIN President Michalis Giannakos, highlighting the shortcomings of the National Health System.
The data reflect the serious problem our hospitals are facing, as he says, in the midst of the pandemic.
«As of January 16, 2022, approximately 21,325 patients with COVID-19 had died in public hospitals.". AHEPA holds the record for the highest death toll, with 1,023 deaths. A total of 8,602 patients with COVID-19 were admitted to hospitals in Northern Greece. »That’s a rate of 40%,” notes Mr. Giannakos.

According to Mr. Giannakos, nearly 75% of the total were lost outside the ICU. There are hospitals, such as NIKAIA, where many patients died without the hospital having a single ICU bed for COVID-19 patients.
In Thessaloniki, he says, 20,000 surgeries were canceled in 2021. Many of the patients were forced to turn to the private sector, paying a corresponding financial price, while, for the first time, private clinics in Thessaloniki have long waiting lists for surgeries.
Regarding the conscription of doctors, he notes that 12 private practitioners were conscripted at AHEPA: 5 anesthesiologists and 7 internists. One of them was already working at AHEPA as a permanent physician, and another was working at the Military Hospital.
A third person appeared and said he would pursue legal action and would not appear. In the end, of the 12 doctors who were summoned, 7 filed for an exemption and did not appear.
