With a a detailed, well-documented, and unequivocal letter towards Southern Peloponnese Protected Areas Management Unit, the O.F.Y.P.E.K.A., the Mr. Papastavrou, Minister of the Environment and Secretary General for the Environment and Water, Mr. Varelidis, the Mayor of Kythira Efstratios Charhalakis raises defensive wall in contrast to the effort installation of three industrial wind farms by TERNA ENERGY on the island.
In his letter, Mr. Charchalakis dismantles the tactics point by point who attempt to circumvent environmental laws and the common sense of justice, requesting immediate rejection of the environmental permits for the projects. The mayor of Kythira brings to the forefront a wealth of evidence—studies, decisions by the Council of State, findings by international organizations, data on migratory birds of prey in the island’s protected areas— and reveals that these are threatened with total destruction.
As he points out, «The planned ASPIE facility is located in one of the country's most geographically and environmentally sensitive areas» and emphasizes that the Approval of the Special Environmental Study where prohibits the construction of wind farms it should be done by mid-2025 (that is, right now), as he has also stated in an interview in Daily ο Secretary General Petros Varelidis, who is in charge.
The Mayor makes it clear How, If the permit is granted, it will cause irreversible damage to the island and states that «The Municipality of Kythira, as the owner of the land, will not grant a permit for the facility.», while «will exhaust every legal and institutional means, in Greece and Europe».
The letter is yet another a decisive step toward protecting the region’s natural, cultural, and social capital, in complete harmony with the the expressed will of the citizens of Kythira. It is a a historic «no» which states: Kythira is not a target for anyone's business plans.
