Georgios Mormoris, physician and philosopher

Georgios Iouliou Mormoris was born in 1720 on Kythira. He was the son of noble parents of Cretan descent and the brother of Nikiforos Mormoris, Bishop of Kythira, who was later elected Archbishop of Philadelphia (of Venice) but never ascended to that throne. He was a great intellectual figure who enjoyed widespread recognition and acclaim. He studied medicine at the University of Padua. After completing his studies, in 1745 he published his work *Amintas*, written in fifteen-syllable verse and based on the eponymous work by Torquato Tasso. It is a representative example of his literary work. The language of the work is colloquial, with some literary elements and numerous Cretan and Ionian dialects. Shortly thereafter, he returned and settled in Kythira, where he practiced medicine while frequently traveling to Italy. In 1770, he was elected a member of the Academy of Florence. He died in 1790 in Kythira.
