The whole first episode you wonder if you're seeing someone Movie Jordan Peele's Get Out or Us. Eventually you realize it's different creators, but the image and feel with From is the same.
Someone else might reasonably think it's some adaptation of a Stephen King book. But that's not the case either,
John Griffin, creator of the From series, has drawn a lot of inspiration from these two sides, either intentionally or unknowingly, as we get to the point of making comparisons and finding similarities and differences.
In From we are in one of those brutal cities located somewhere in the south and central part of America. Where even if you climb the highest mountain and it's crystal clear, you won't see the sea. Sultry.
This is the city into which those who enter can never leave again. Although the residents have taken care to put a large and pointed tree trunk at the very end to prevent passers-by by car from entering, few get the message. And once the log is up, there is no turning back.
The ring road that could have led them away has now become a roundabout and each time you return to the same spot. And if by chance an escape point is found, some unexplained event will occur. Such as a driver being swept towards you by the atmosphere, crashing, falling unconscious and being trapped forever.
From From with love
In From, the residents know that there is a loophole, a blank spot where one can escape capture and that is in the first moments and first interactions. If they answer you then you're done. If you don't socialize with them, you might as well get away with it.
And if at a certain point the confinement is overcome, because others are living it, then what doesn't stop is death. The city doesn't just stop the inhabitants from leaving. It's also killing them off so that it doesn't overcrowd.
Every night, at midnight, it brings out ghosts and/or zombies, which may have a sweet form to convince you to put them in the house and kill you.
From isn't characterized by breathless moments or jumpscares. It has a plot to serve, it has a structure and it takes care with very measured moments to make you get out of your chair. It's a very special horror.
It does not resort to the sophisticated. All the scenes that scare you are simple and expected. But the breathless breath hangs on the edge of your palate and jumps back in.
In each episode From has several sluggish parts that move along indifferently, but by episode 4, when it has introduced its world, its philosophy, it becomes one of the best horror series.
