On Friday 27 May, on the occasion of the visit to Kythera of the Australian Ambassador to Greece Mr. Athanasios Spyrou, the Association of Friends of Kythera Museums organised an event at the open theatre of ‘Hidden Retreats’, located in Agios Prokopios in Platia Ammos. During the event there was a presentation of the Association's work and in particular the architectural plans of the Museum of Migration of Kythera in Agia Pelagia, which is currently under construction.
The Association of Friends of Kythera Museums, after signing a memorandum of cooperation with the Municipality of Kythera, finances and coordinates the architectural, museological and museographic study for the Museum.
This project has been placed under the auspices of the Australian Embassy in Greece.
The vision of the Friends of Kythera Museums for the creation of the Museum was developed by the President of the Association, Mrs. Eleni Tzortzopoulou, in a climate of emotion and anticipation for the moment when the history of every immigrant who has a connection with Kythera will find its place in the Museum of Migration.
The event was attended by the Mayor Mr. Stratos Harhalakis, the Deputy Mayors Mr. Charalambos Sougianis and Mr. Panagiotis Zantiotis, the president of the K.I.P.A. Mr. Georgios Kasimatis, representatives of municipal authorities and presidents of local organizations and associations.
A special place among the guests was occupied by Mr. George Kapsanis, son of the late Panagiotis Kapsanis. Panagiotis Kapsanis in the 1950s donated a plot of land to the community of Agia Pelagia to build a Primary School. When the school ceased to function, the land became the property of the Municipality of Kythera. In this plot, after the completion of the studies, the Municipality will proceed with the construction of the Museum.
Today the Kapsani family, the immigrants themselves, are proudly awaiting the opening of the Migration Museum with great enthusiasm.
