In an urgent letter addressed to the chairpersons of the Superfund and ELTA, as well as the Minister of National Economy and Finance, the Mayor of Kythira, Efstratios Charhalakis, expresses his opposition to the decision to suspend operations at the ELTA branch in Potamos, Kythira, and demands that it be revoked. Read the letter:
Subject: Suspension of Operations at the ELTA Branch in Potamos, Kythira
The decision to suspend operations at the ELTA branch in Potamos
We are strongly opposed to the Kythira bill and demand its immediate repeal.
This decision will cause great hardship and financial costs for hundreds of
residents of the northern part of Kythira, especially the elderly who
are unable to drive to Chora (25 km) to receive services there
ELTA branch.
Furthermore, this decision is essentially contrary to the provision of Article 101 of the
The Constitution, according to which «The legislature and the executive, when acting
By law, they are required to take into account the specific conditions of the islands
»and mountainous regions, ensuring their development.".
We wonder exactly what kind of «development» we can be talking about when our islands
are stripped of vital public services and driven to decline and
impoverishment.
We hope that the basic individual conscience of those who signed this unacceptable
decision, to raise exactly the same question for them.
We demand (Yes, we, the permanent residents of the islands and remote areas of Greece, have the right to demand!) the immediate revocation of the decision in question and the continued operation of the ELTA branch in Potamos, Kythira.
For once, let's stop treating those who are struggling to survive as enemies
Island Greece!
With respect,
The Mayor
Eustratios Charhalakis
