During his stay in Kythera, the Vice-Regional Governor of the Islands Panagiotis Hatziperos visited the ongoing and planned projects with a total value of 22.500.000€. He also met with local stakeholders and citizens where he discussed with them the problems they face and informed them about the actions and projects of the Region.
In particular, starting from the work of rehabilitation of the landfill sites of Kythera and Antikythera, the Vice-Regional Governor noted that the work is progressing satisfactorily in Kythera and with their completion the payment of fines ceases definitively.
This project is implemented in the framework of the effective cooperation between the Region of Attica and the Municipality of Kythera. Specifically, the implementation of the project «Waste Management of Kythera - Antikythera», with a budget of 4.549.275,29 euros, solves definitively and effectively the long-standing problem of waste management in Kythera and Antikythera.
Afterwards, Mr. Hadjiperos visited the Fratsia to ascertain the progress of the square's redevelopment project budget 292.000 euros with VAT which is financed by own resources of the Region of Attica. After the installation of the luminaires, the project is expected to be completed in August 2018.
The execution of the project of upgrading of the road connecting Agia Pelagia to Agia Anastasia. A rainwater drainage channel is placed with an outlet to the adjacent stream leading to the sea. The project is important and has a developmental character for the settlement of Agia Pelagia, as a safe and modern road with flood protection will be constructed, which will solve a chronic problem of access to the residences in the wider area, a problem that until now no one has effectively and efficiently addressed and which is a chronic request of residents and visitors.
Regarding the «Feasibility study and master plan for the development of the landing and take-off runway at the State Airport», pending approval by the CAA. The Vice-Registrar is constantly coordinating the procedures so that we can proceed with the final study as soon as possible.
In addition, operational development projects have been planned and are being carried out on the islands of Kythera and Antikythera, which when completed will transform them, such as:
- Water supply of Agia Pelagia before 3.100.000€
- Construction of New Sports Facilities at the «Manitochori» site before 510.000€.
- Reconstruction of Makrona bridge, pr. 1.800.000€.
- Pretreatment Unit and Tank for raw sewage of the WWTP of Kapsali Kythera, πρ.200.000€.
- Construction and Operation of Desalination Units in the Settlements of Ag. Pelagia and Diakofti, pr. 1.300.000€.
- Road construction, total price 3.320.000€.
- Renovation of the Children's Centre at the «Logothetianika» site, pre 300.000 €.
- Biological treatment studies.
- Erection of a monument of MEMORY and HONOR to the Symi sponge workers in Antikythera, pre 75.000€.
- Rural roads.
Taking into account the issue of overlapping responsibilities and the multinationality that have created a blockage for the development of the country, the Vice-Regional Governor noted that not only will, good cooperation and resources are not enough. But there should also be legislative possibilities to exploit the comparative advantages of the islands. This is the point, after all.
