In a statement that seems to describe as impossible to achieve immunity wall with the vaccination in order to address the pandemic covid-19, just a few days after the end of the summer, which was the government's much-publicized milestone for achieving an immunity wall by vaccinating 70% of the population, he went on to speak on the morning news show SKAI, the infectious disease specialist Eleni Giamarello.
The fact that the autumn started with a very high number of cases without schools having opened yet and that human activity has not yet returned to normal, «practically means that we don't know exactly where the epidemic is right now», admitted Ms Giamarello, so ’we need to vaccinate as many people as possible«.
And immediately afterwards, he proceeded to an upward revision of the rate needed to achieve a wall of tolerance: «To say “succeed” you need to cover more than 90% of the population, the immunity of the herd does not apply to it.’ Indeed, he did not stop there, but went further, saying that »for these viruses, especially this virus, we don't even know if the immunity wall is in place. What we want is vaccinate the whole population. Then, you really create a wall and there are no mutations.».
As the journalists immediately pointed out, at a time when there are currently 3.5-4 million unvaccinated citizens in Greece, it seems out of place and out of time to declare that the population should be fully vaccinated. «The way you say it, we'll never finish», as they commented. And Ms. Giamarello confirmed, saying «exactly». And immediately afterwards, he returned to the «official» narrative, saying that «if we want to reduce risk, we need to increase vaccination as quickly and as well as possible».
