The Archaeological Museum of Milos is housed in a neoclassical building in Plaka Milos and presents findings from the important prehistoric city of Phylakopi, as well as antiquities from collections and traditions from the ancient city and from other places on the island.
During the last decades, the rescue excavations carried out by the Ephorate of Antiquities of Cyclades on the island of Milos, on the occasion of requests for building and expansion of the island's mines, have enriched the archaeological map of the island with a large number of new, hitherto unknown sites. The number of finds that came to light changed the archaeological data and highlighted the importance of Milos in the Aegean.
Η Ephorate of Antiquities of Cyclades along with the renovation of the museum, designed and implemented a new archaeological exhibition in the lobby entitled «tafo kterikon», in order to present for the first time to the public, to Miliou and to the tourists of the island, particularly important new findings from parts of uncovered cemeteries and individual burials of the Mycenaean, Archaic and Roman times.
Reflecting an important act of ancient burial ritual, the various grave goods that accompanied the dead reflect the societies of their time, revealing aspects of their beliefs. Both posthumous gifts and evidence of life, grave goods are precious threads that connect us with the past, weaving once again, after centuries, the stories of ancient Miles.
The renovated museum and the new temporary exhibition will be inaugurated by the Minister of Culture, Lina Mendoni on Thursday 30 June. The exhibition opens to the public on Friday 1 July.
