Exhibition by the General Lyceum of Kythira in Merkatos: «Churches Everywhere!»

Kythera General High School is pleased to invite you to the exhibition «Churches everywhere!» as part of its action plans and cultural programs for the school year 2022-2023.

The program «Churches Everywhere!» is an action of the Kythera General High School for the school year 2022-2023. Its purpose is to highlight the churches of Kythera as tokens of the cultural heritage and history of the island; and to offer a framework for cooperation and dialogue between institutions and residents of the island regarding their timeless significance, but also a possibly different meaning and use from generation to generation.

Many of the churches and monasteries that can be found in various parts of the island were bequeathed to local families by older generations and carry interesting stories. Apart from their family significance, they reflect aspects of Kytherian social life, interwoven with everyday and religious practices. Together with their natural landscape, architecture and iconography, the churches of Kythera are part of the island's identity, which we wanted to unfold through our action.

In our report we present four such cases of churches: Agios Leo (Agios Ilias, family Kalligeros), Agios Demetrios (Kambianika, family Kyriaki), Agios Nikolaos (Fyroi, family Charos) and Agioi Anargyros (Xeroulaki, family Megalokonomou). We interviewed members of these families, attended religious festivals, toured the churches and made audiovisual recordings. We discussed and processed this material with second grade students, which we are pleased to invite you to see in our exhibition.

We thank the families who hosted us so warmly and shared their stories with us. We thank Mr. Georgilas for the willingness to provide the exhibition space of Mercato and the School Committee of the Municipality of Kythera for the financial support and undivided help in the organization of the exhibition - especially the Deputy Mayor Mr. Georgios Kominos.

Thanks to composer Dimitris Bakas, who created a unique soundscape and video-documentary to accompany the exhibition, and to Professor Scott Townsend (College of Design, North Carolina State University, US) for designing the posters.
