Mrs Marina Papadopoulou, an appointed teacher in Paros, described as «tragic and unacceptable» the situation faced by first-time and substitute teachers on all the Greek islands.
Ms Papadopoulou, who was speaking on OPEN's morning show ”Open Communication” five days before schools open, referred to the process of finding a home as a «nightmare».
«I have been on the island (Paros) for 10 days now with a child, in rentals, for 2-3 days, here and there,» said Papadopoulou, who spoke of «unaffordable prices» in rents. «We are talking about 300-400 euros for a 30-square-metre studio,» she revealed.
Councillor: ask your parents to help you
The complete unwillingness of the Local Government to respond to her demands, she then denounced the Municipality of Paros, calling it «non-existent» and talking about local bodies who «whistle indifferently».
«At the City Council in the summer when the ELME (Association of Secondary Education Officers) had gone, a councillor said that “the substitutes should be helped by their parents, because the Municipality cannot bear this burden», concluded Ms Papadopoulou.
And the teachers in Kythera in the galley of not finding permanent residence
A similar situation regarding the difficulty of finding a permanent residence is faced by teachers in Kythera. According to Kythera.News report, the island appears as a “barren line” in the availability of accommodation for rent by the year as the owners prefer the short-term availability of their houses through the Airbnb platform. Indeed, some initiative is being sought, even on our island, by local bodies, which could contribute to finding a way out of the current quagmire.
