In a statement on the anniversary of the Restoration of Democracy through his personal Facebook account, the mayor of Kythera Mr. Efstratios Harhalakis made a statement:
«47 years ago, Constantine Karamanlis was accepted by the entire Greek people, even by his political opponents, as the only guarantor for the smooth transition of the country to democracy, after 7 years of plaster, violation of individual freedoms and rights, political persecution and assassinations. In the tragic moments of the Cyprus drama, Karamanlis was a tangible hope for better days and for the consolidation of democratic freedoms. Karamanlis succeeded. He led the country bloodlessly to democracy, created institutions, finally resolved the constitutional issue, laid the foundations for economic and industrial development and - above all - put Greece on the chariot of the EEC, definitively determining its historical destiny.
Since then, our country has experienced the longest period of peace in its history, the institutions have been established, democracy is functioning despite its imperfections. But much work still needs to be done. Because during these years some people have misunderstood and still misunderstand the essence and meaning of democracy. Because democracy means rules, not institutionalism. It means observing laws, conditions and, above all, limits, and not impunity and impunity. It means implementing the decisions of the majority and not imposing the views of minorities. Democracy does not mean violence, destruction and a misguided «rightism» that disregards laws, rules and limits. Democracy means law and order, lawfulness, orderliness and security.
LONG LIVE DEMOCRACY!
REAL DEMOCRACY AND NOT BY FIAT!».
