«The Greece attended the informal five-party meeting convened by the Secretary-General of the United Nations with a view to creating conditions that would allow the resumption of negotiations within the framework expressly set by the United Nations Security Council, i.e. a bizonal, bicommunal federation», the Foreign Minister said. Nikos Dendias following the informal five-party meeting on the Cyprus in Geneva.
«In this context, we came to this meeting underlining that any solution, apart from these parameters, must be fully compatible with the European acquis,» he said:
«We have shown a constructive attitude. We have made an effort together with the Republic of Cyprus efforts to achieve this goal. Unfortunately, it has not been possible to find common ground for the start of negotiations in this framework, due to the stance of the Turkish Cypriot and Turkish sides.».
The Secretary-General announced that he will continue his efforts and will convene a new informal five-party conference, which will take place in two or three months, Dendias said:
«We made it clear that these efforts by the Secretary General should be undertaken within the agreed framework and within the scope of his mandate. That is, the relevant United Nations Security Council resolutions to seek a solution within the framework of a bizonal bicommunal federation. We recalled that the UN Security Council Resolutions are fully binding on all sides».
