As part of the series concerts Cosmos, the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Centre (SNFCC) explores the different manifestations of minimalism music, but also its influences, as they appear in the cinema, in concert halls and clubs worldwide.
After the Philip Glass Ensemble concert last December and just before Christian Löffler's appearance with the Ergon Ensemble, which was moved to 4 April, the SNFCC welcomes on Monday 28 March, at 20:30, the Dustin O'Halloran. The Emmy award-winning American composer and pianist joins the musicians of the Ergon Ensemble in the Stavros Niarchos Hall at the SNFCC, in a rare musical encounter that highlights the romantic side of minimalism. The concert is made possible thanks to the donation of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF).
Known through his personal albums, the ambient band A Winged Victory for the Sullen, as well as his compositions for films and series (including the famous «Opus 23» in Sofia Coppola's Marie Antoinette), Dustin O'Halloran comes to the SNFCC for a unique meeting with the Greek audience. He will be joined by the musicians of the Ergon Ensemble, in their third appearance in the context of the SNFCC's Cosmos concerts.
Dustin O'Halloran was born in Phoenix, Arizona and spent his childhood mostly in Los Angeles and Hawaii. Although his involvement with music began with classical piano studies at the age of seven, his first exposure to the general public came through the indie rock band Devics. In 2004 he released his solo debut, Piano Solos. Two years later, he also established himself as a film composer, with the soundtrack to Sofia Coppola's Marie Antoinette (2006). Since then, he has written music for dozens of films and television productions and was awarded an Emmy for his score for the television series Transparent (2014-2017), and was nominated for an Oscar, Golden Globe and BAFTA for his score for the film Lion (2016), in collaboration with German musician and composer Volker Bertelmann (aka Hauschka).
In 2011 he co-founded A Winged Victory for the Sullen with Adam Wiltzie. Versatile and open to challenges, in 2017 he produced Katy Perry's «Into Me You See» and in 2021 his most recent solo work Silfur was released by Deutsche Grammophon.
The Ergon Ensemble was created in 2008 with the aim of presenting the work of both contemporary living composers and masterpieces of avant-garde music from the 20th and 21st centuries.
With a core group of musicians that is reinforced, depending on the needs of each project, by a large number of talented young artists, it is today the leading contemporary music group in Greece. Its great flexibility, the precision of its performances, the impeccable preparation, as well as the talent of its musicians have led to excellent reviews and wide public acceptance. The Ergon Ensemble has collaborated with the National Opera House, the Athens Concert Hall, the Onassis Cultural Centre and has performed at many national and international festivals (Athens Festival, SNF Nostos of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF), Suså Festival (Denmark), etc.).
