Η Scientific Society of Olive Oil Encyclopedists (4E) announces that it is co-organizing the thematic session «Climate Change: Impacts on Olive Cultivation and Mitigation Measures», as part of the conference «The Olive Oil Sector: Challenges and Prospects» with the Midterm Conference of the European program LIFE OLIVER.
The conference will take place on June 11 and 12, 2026 in Agricultural University of Athens and will provide a comprehensive overview of the key issues and prospects for the olive oil sector, as well as the impacts of climate change.
With a focus on climate change, special emphasis will be placed on «carbon farming» in olive groves and in enhancing the sustainability of olive cultivation through carbon sequestration.
Through this collaboration, LIFE OLIVER aims to highlight the role of olive groves as climate change mitigation systems, by leveraging their ability to sequester CO₂ and provide critical ecosystem services.
The Goal of the Midterm Conference The goal of the LIFE OLIVER program is to help establish a common framework for understanding the challenges and opportunities facing the olive oil sector, by fostering dialogue among scientists, producers, and policymakers.
Key topics:
- The Prospects for Carbon Farming in Olive Groves and Its Contribution to Climate Change Mitigation
- Economic benefits for producers through the development of carbon markets and services
- Environmental Benefits from CO₂ Sequestration and the Enhancement of Agroecosystems
- Voluntary carbon offsets and ecolabeling schemes for olive oil
- Carbon Sequestration Certification System Being Developed as Part of the LIFE OLIVER Project
Scientific Directors and Speakers:
- Professor Kostas Bithas, Chair of the Department of Economics and Regional Development, Panteion University – «Coal Mining: Prospects, Economic and Environmental Benefits»
- Flavia Francese, Environmental Engineer, TETIS Institute SRL – «OLIVER Protocol and Certification Framework for Carbon Farming in Olive Cultivation»
- Professors Pablo Domouso de Agar and José Liétor Gallego, University of Jaén –“Coal Farming: The Fruit of the Future”
- Professor Roberto Calisti, Agronomist, University of Perugia – «Simulation using “OlivCarbCalc” to demonstrate the credits that can be earned on a Greek farm»
The Scientific Society of Olive Oil Encyclopedists (4E) and LIFE OLIVER invite all interested parties to participate and actively contribute to shaping a sustainable future for olive oil production and the environment.
