The Kythera Hospital has been operating without a paediatrician for several months causing the concern and insecurity to parents and children. And while we are in the post-pandemic era, viruses are on the increase and children are suffering. As we are told parents of sick children have been forced to travel to mainland Greece to get better health care.
The issue was raised in an intervention at the meeting of the Board of Directors, yesterday, February 22, 2023, by Councillor Manos Trifyllis. It is noted that the minor opposition raises the issue for the umpteenth time at Board meetings. Mr. Trifyllis made harsh criticism of the fact that once again the Mayor of Kythera was absent from the meeting and addressed the deputy mayors asking:
«What actions has the mayor of Kythera done to address the anger of the island's parents regarding the absence of a paediatrician from the Kythera hospital?; The situation that has been created is explosive now and there is no mobility on the part of the Municipality of Kythera. Second, in the hospital this particular the majority of doctors want to leave. The reasons why this medical service basically wants to leave the hospital, we have the opinion, and I personally have the opinion, that it has to do with the form of administration that has been followed.» He went on to refer again to the absent Mayor saying: «Mr. Mayor who obviously has edges in this area, not to speak in a different way because it is not right, would be able to exert pressure, assisted by the City Council and I think all the wards so there should be some progress in a positive direction. The hospital is being cleaned up, in the field of medical service, faces problems in the field of nursing service and dismantling in the field of technical services... And we, as the City Council, are watching apathetically what is happening.»
Mr. Trifillis continued to refer to a number of «frozen» issues at the Hospital, asked the City Council to deal with them, and the Mayor not to dwell on the idea that «we have an election period so we do not break eggs...». And he concluded by saying that «it is not possible on a daily basis to have children evacuated to mainland Greece».
From the opposition, Mr. Trifyllis received no response, and once again the matter was referred to the Mayor and to the next meeting at which he will attend.
And the gynecologist who is leaving again if there is something extraordinary what is going on we have to run to Athens something has to be done about it
