«Tentoglou wins silver in Oregon

With a tremendous jump in his sixth and final attempt (8.36 m), China's Wang «stole» the gold medal from Miltiadis Tentoglou at the World Championships in Oregon. Until then, the Tokyo Olympic gold medalist Olympic champion from Tokyo was in first place with 8.32 m (5th attempt), a jump that ultimately earned him 2nd place in the long jump final and the silver medal. Third place went to Switzerland's Ehammer with 8.16 m.

In his eighth appearance in a major championship final in the last four years and having won five gold medals, Miltos Tentoglou came within a hair's breadth of adding the missing medal to his collection, but Wang «stole the show» in the final moments of the competition.

Until then, with a best jump of 8.32m (5th attempt), Tentoglou held the gold medal in his arms, but nevertheless failed to climb onto the top step of the podium for the sixth time in a major competition, without this detracting from his great success.

In the early hours of Sunday (17/07) Giorgos Pomaskis' athlete may have entered the final with an invalid attempt, coming from 8.03m in yesterday's qualifying round (he qualified for the final with the 5th best performance), however, this did not prevent him from achieving the big jumps he wanted (8.30m, 8.29m, 8.24m, 8.32m) to take an early lead in the battle for gold, in his third World Championship (2017 in London and 2019 in Doha were his two previous appearances).

Tentoglou traveled to Eugene with this year's record of 8.36 m in the summer season and 8.55 m in the winter season, and as it turned out today, he needed to reach his best performance to climb to the top of the podium, in a year where he consistently jumps over 8.20 m.

Thus, for the first time in history, Greece saw a long jumper reach such heights in a competition of this level. None of those who had participated in World Championships in the past had managed to climb onto the podium, with the best performance to date being that of Kostas Koukodimos in 1995 in Gothenburg, where he took 6th place.

Miltos Tentoglou started with a big jump, well over 8 meters, but it was invalidated by a few centimeters. The same thing happened to the American, Marquis Deddy, one of the Greek champion's main rivals for the podium and, in particular, for first place.

The Tokyo Olympic gold medalist was clearly having a good day and proved it in the best possible way in his second attempt, in which he «flew» to 8.30m with a perfect jump and, taking the lead, laid the foundations for achieving his goal very early on.

On the third attempt, he made another great jump of 8.29m, while continuing his consistent performance with 8.24m on his fourth attempt. The Greek champion's best jump came on his fifth attempt with 8.32m, and nothing seemed to indicate that things could change.

However, China's Wang had the last word in the competition. With a tremendous jump of 8.36m in his final attempt, he snatched the gold medal from Tentoglou, who tried to repeat his Tokyo performance in his sixth attempt but failed.

The ranking in the final of the long jump:
